Policies & Procedures
Student IDs
My expectation is that the student have his/her school-issued ID.
Bathroom Passes
We are not in the third grade thus we just need to check if the bathroom pass is available (in other words, that someone else is not already out). If available, discreetly and without disruption obtain the pass, sign out on the clipboard, leave your school ID on my desk, and go on the mission. Please limit your mission to 5 minutes, and to the one person at a time criteria. Also, remember that for the first and last 15 minutes of class no one should be using the pass.
The bathroom pass is to be used to go to the bathroom, not for cruising or going to the counselor’s or some other reason. Note that if it is detected that you are misusing the bathroom pass, your privilege may be suspended. Bathroom passes are color coded for each building and you must leave your Student ID card to obtain use of the Bathroom Pass. Of course, if you have an legitimate emergency, you need to let me know and go quickly forth.
The Bathroom policy at Andress High School is that no student be allowed to the Bathroom during the first and last 15 minutes of the period. Of course, no one will be denied use of the bathroom for either medical or emergency reasons.
Classroom Housekeeping
In the business world, a very important factor is the maintaining of not only company equipment but also company premises. We are no different here. It is expected that you help in the maintaining a safe and clean environment in which we work in. You are responsible for not only your immediate work area but also I ask your help in keeping the whole classroom in an orderly and clean manner. You are responsible to leave your work areas in the set-up arrangement as outlined by me. You are not the only person using your work station and you will show respect and courtesy by leaving your station in the proper manner. Remember how you maintain your work site, your digital portfolio, your backpack or self gives great insight into how you handle yourself in other matters. Let’s be proud of our classroom and in ourselves.
Pass to Another Class
I admit, I am selfish. I believe that you should devote my class period to my class. However, please also remember that it is the school policy that you accomplish any visit to another teacher before or after school. You must submit a signed request from the teacher prior to being allowed to go to their class.
Remember that visits to the Counselor’s office must be done before school, during lunch or after school. I am not allowed to send you during class instruction time. If you are needed at the Counselor’s office, they will send for you. Also, a pass to Attendance to sign yourself out or to meet your parents to go to an appointment is not permitted. The proper procedure is that your parents physically report to the attendance office and at that time, the attendance office will request your release.
Internet Usage
The Internet is a fabulous place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there. Our class will find itself in need of using the Internet. There are already set policies concerning the Internet in place here at Andress High School which align themselves with the policies of the El Paso Independent School District.
So, what does this mean to us? Remember that you must have the permission from yours truly to get on the Internet. Once there, make certain that you do not travel to places you should not go to (i.e., Facebook, MySpace, e-mail or any inappropriate sites). I maintain the right to suspend your privilege to use the Internet at any time with or without advance warning.
This includes any “round abouts” or proxies used to circumvent the normal procedures to go into sites. You are not able to download any materials or programs, do not change any setting on the computer including the screensaver, do not rearrange the icons on the desktop, do not mess with any of the wiring, and you must obtain permission to print anything other than the work assignments. Please do not open the DVD/CD drive without permission.
These policies are in place to protect you, our school, our equipment and your help in following these policies will be greatly appreciated. An opportunity for joy, peace, and happiness.
Equipment
Our computers are new. As you well know, it is difficult to obtain new equipment due to limited funds and budget cuts. With the new cuts in both Federal and State budgets, it has even become more difficult to purchase new equipment. It is our responsibility to make certain that we keep this equipment and any equipment belonging to the school in the best shape possible. What does this mean? I am asking you to help in protecting the equipment we use. Don’t abuse it or damage it.
You will notice that we are using flat screen monitors, this makes it very important that you enter and leave the computer area with caution. It is very easy to accidentally bump a flat screen and tip them over and cause damage, so please be careful.
Cheating and/or Copying
The idea is for you to do your work, homework, projects and/or assignments on your own. We may do some assignments that call for you to work as a member of a team. There is nothing wrong with “brainstorming” or collaborating with others to get ideas or guidance. The No-No is copying someone else’s work and passing it off as your own.
Much of the work that we do involves your creativity. We will be working on developing your “vision” or point of view. To copy someone else’s idea or thought is just not “cool”.
I know that if someone asks you to copy your work, you don’t want to be a jerk and not let him. But think about this, would you do his work, say in a company or business, and then let him get paid for doing the work and maybe even get a promotion because he did such good work? Hmmmm…..
When working in a group it is of the utmost importance that every group member pull his weight in the project. This is like “Survivor”, you can be voted off the group. If this should happen, you will be responsible for all sections or segments of the project. I will be observing.
Food and/or Drink in the Classroom
Andre Raton, the resident mouse, would love for you to eat and drink in the classroom. The problem with this is that Andre also likes to invite his relatives and they do not have good hygiene and bathroom manners (they go anywhere). So, to help control this, I ask that you do not bring food or drink into the classroom. If you wish to have a bottle of water during class, please make certain that it has a sport cap or regular cap on when you are not drinking out of it. BTW, please do not drink anything near the computers and their keyboards, this makes computer techs very nervous.
CELL PHONES AND/OR OTHER ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
Please refer to the Andress Cellphone Policy
My expectation is that the student have his/her school-issued ID.
